He measures up, looks at the levels and the fall, checks what is already there and how deep it goes, works out where the water will go, and talks through the surfaces that suit the drive. You get a price for that specification. It is agreed upfront and it does not change halfway through the job.
Do you work for main contractors as well as homeowners?
Both. For builders, developers and main contractors the work is usually a defined package on somebody else's programme, and the thing that matters most is turning up on the agreed day and leaving the ground right for the next trade. For homeowners it is usually the stage before an extension, a porch or a major garden job, where nothing else can start until the ground is prepared. The work is the same; the briefing is different.
What happens to the waste from a garden clearance?
It leaves site legally. BMS (trading as BMS Building & Groundworks Ltd, formerly BMS Landscaping & Paving Ltd) holds an Environment Agency waste carrier licence, number CBDU453042, which covers green waste, broken slabs, rubble and spoil. It is worth asking any contractor for their number, because waste that is fly tipped can be traced back to the property it came from, and the householder can be the one who hears about it.
How long does a job take?
It depends on the size of the job, the materials, how much has to come out first and what the ground underneath turns out to be like. You get the expected timescale with the quote, once the site has been seen.

Every job is quoted on its own specification, site and requirements, after Perry Niven has seen it. The price is agreed upfront and does not change halfway through the job.
